Succumbing to the pressure of ally BJP, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed government on Friday formally arrested the Hurriyat hardliner and face of 2010 `azadi' agitation Masarat Alam, sparking a fresh wave of protests in the Kashmir valley.
Alam's arrest came just a month after he was released by Mufti government after almost spending four years in jail for leading "Quit Kashmir Movement" in which 120 youth were killed mostly in the security force firing on the stone pelting mobs in 2010.
A posse of the Jammu and Kashmir police reached Alam's residence at Zaindar Moholla in the sensitive old city at 8.30 am and immediately took him into custody. Alam was whisked away to Shaheed Gunj police station from where he was shifted to joint interrogation centre in Budgam.
Alam and Huriyat hawk Syed Ali Shah Geelani was placed under house arrest on Thursday evening in a bid to prevent them from leading a march to Tral where two people including an alleged militant were killed on April 14.
Massive protests rocked parts of Kashmir after news about Alam spread in the area. Stone pelting mobs clashed with police in some areas after Friday prayers.
Police said Alam was arrested for his seditious activities of instigating the crowd by hoisting anti national flag and shouting pro-Pakistan and anti-India slogans during the rally held at Hyderpora on April 14.
"During investigation the video footage of the incident was examined and it was found that the said individual (Alam) was involved in leading the crowd to raise anti national slogans and hoist Pakistani flags. He himself was found raising such slogans and thereby instigating the crowd to follow him," the spokesman added.
"This is not the first time that it (raising pro Pakistan slogans) has happened. Since 1947 people have been raising slogans for Pakistan and freedom. The arrest will not deter us," Alam told reporters while he was being taken into custody.
