Several engineering students from the University of Mumbai who have recently applied for re-evaluation or photocopy of their answer sheets are left in a lurch as the university has failed to appoint an agency for on-screen evaluation.

From March 31, the University did not renew the contract of Mindlogic, a company that was conducting the process of on-screen evaluation for all the engineering exams under the university for the last three years. Students who had applied for re-evaluation of papers have been hit as the portal to access their results has become non-functional after March 31.

“A large number of engineering colleges from various colleges affiliated to the university are clueless about the status of their application as the portal has stopped working and students have not been informed about what is to be done,”said Mahadeo Jagtap, ex-senate member of the University who has taken up the issue.

The University is set to evaluate answersheets for all the courses under its purview onscreen starting this year. Despite three attempts, however, it has failed to appoint an agency for the task. University officials said that with the contract of the previous company coming to an end, there is a decision to allot the task of evaluating all the engineering answer sheets to the same company which would be fixed for all the other assessments.

MA Khan, Registrar of the university said that the move would help in making the process more uniform. “We have decided to appoint one single agency for all the evaluation work, including for the engineering section,”he added.

A senior university official said that students need not worry as they can still avail the physical copies of their reevaluation as per the old process. “While the new agency would be appointed soon, students can still get their papers as per the old system in hard copy” said the official.

The wait continues

The University would make its third attempt in appointing an agency for on-screen evaluation of close to 19 lakh answer sheets on Thursday. Engineering students are worried that they would have to wait to check their result status until a new agency is appointed as the contract of the previous agency is over.
