The Maharashtra State Commision for Women (MSCW), which is otherwise a low-profile body known for its slow pace in addressing plaints of needy women, suddenly woke up and decided to serve a notice on actor Salman Khan for his alleged 'raped woman' remark.

Taking a suo motu cognisance in the matter, the MSCW has summoned the actor or his lawyer on June 29 to clarify his remarks.

Salman sparked a controversy on last Tuesday by saying that he felt like a 'raped woman' after the shoot of a tough wrestling scene for his upcoming film Sultan.

The state commission's move raises quite a few eyebrows mainly because the National Commision for Women (NCW) had already issued a notice to the actor a day before. Commission's chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar, also the head of BJP's Mahila Morcha, justified her action, saying since Salman stays in Maharashtra, the issue needed to be taken up by the state body.

However, those who know the functioning of the state panel and its 'expertise' in handling such matters don't expect much out of this case. Even high-profile cases of 'derogatory remarks against women' have hit dead end after dragging for months. Ironically, women and child development minister Pankaja Munde is one such case.

It's almost two months since the Rahatkar-led panel sent summons to NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik for his derogatory remarks against Munde. He allegedly referred to her as 'Daruwali bai'. At a public meeting in April, Malik had reportedly said, "We had great leaders like Mrinal Gore, who fought all her life for ensuring water for people. People nicknamed her 'Paniwalli bai'. Whereas, here we have Pankaja Munde, who is siding with the breweries. She will be remembered as 'Daruwali bai'.

Defiant Malik hasn't appeared before the commission even after it extended the deadline thrice. The latest hearing in the case was on Wednesday. Malik refused to appear. Though he never appeared before the commission, he submitted his written response in May. In his response, he not only refused to apologise but also levelled charges against Rahatkar of "colluding with Munde". He also alleged in his letter that both the women were "misusing their official positions" in his case.

Going a step further, Malik dared the panel to pass strictures against him. He also challenged Munde to seek legal remedy if she really thought that she was insulted by him.
