Union minister Narendra Singh Tomar on Monday claimed that BJP had never created the slogan 'Acche Din Aane Wale Hain'. He was responding to criticism over rising onion prices in the country.

"The BJP never said that 'Acche Din Aayenge'. During last Lok Sabha elections slogans like 'Acche Din Aayenge' and 'Rahul Nani ke Ghar Jayenge' (Rahul will go to his maternal grandma's house) were was coined on the social media. People put these slogans in BJP's mouth. However, we humbly accepted people's feelings expressed through such slogans," Tomar told reporters.

But the election campaigns of the BJP paint a different picture, it seems. In fact, 'Acche Din Aane Wale Hain' was the official slogan of the BJP. The party had even created songs, billboards and videos centred around the slogan.

The above video was even customised or abrogated to suit appeals to different sections of society:

Furthermore, PM Narendra Modi himself used the slogan several times during his election campaign, as well as during his speech following BJP's election victory on May 16, 2014.

Here's a tweet from PM Modi which further attests to the fact:

What prompted Tomar to make such a blatant claims remains unknown. But he may be the latest minister in the BJP government to make a faux pas.

The BJP government has been cornered by the Opposition over issues such as the Vyapam scam, 'Lalitgate', the Land Acquisition Bill etc. The entire monsoon session of Parliament saw the Opposition unite to deny the government a chance to pass important bills. Meanwhile, its ministers and party members have been making controversial comments every now and then.

But Tomar is not the first to make an apparent U-turn. In February, BJP President Amit Shah said that PM Modi's promise that each Indian would receive Rs 15 lakh when black money would be repatriated from abroad was an 'idiom' and should not be taken literally.

Incidentally, the government also had to urgent stock of the situation as the Sensex tanked nearly 1700 points on Monday. Surely Mr Tomar chose the most controversial time to make such a statement?
