The Vishwa Hindu Parishad activists tried to disrupt a wedding saying the groom is not a Hindu, but a Christian marrying a Hindu woman, reports Indian Express

The VHP said that the man, Vishal Mitra (28) is a Christian and that even the woman Ritu Dubey (27) has “mentally converted to Christianity” as she did not wear a bindi and refused to pray to Hindu Gods.

The accusation that Mitra was a Christian was based on the fact that he had played the guitar at a church event in Bhopal in 2013.

They also quoted the programme of the youth conference event at ECI Church, Bhopal which had named Mitra to say he was Christian.

They stopped Mitra and Dubey when they were trying to get married at Additional District Magistrate’s (ADM) office under the Special Marriage Act. in December 27.

VHP leader and former Bajrang Dal convener Devendra Rawat said that the girl's mother had given an affidavit which said  Mitra was a Christian a and sought a probe to establish the same.

However the Mitra said he is a Bengali Brahmin. " We are Bengali Brahmins. I don’t know why they accused me and my mother of following Christianity,’’ he said.

The application for marriage too mentioned that both Mitra and Dubey were Hindus. Mitra's lawyer Milind Wankhede said that his client produced service record of his late father and his own school marksheets to prove he is a Hindu.

Meanwhile Rawat's opinion did not change.  He said, “In a way it’s a victory for us because, despite being a Christian, the boy has agreed to be a Hindu, which is what we wanted,’’
