Batting for making sports a compulsory subject in the school curriculum, the master blaster Sachin Tendulkar on Monday stated that history of Indian sports and its icons should be taught to the students to develop sports culture in the Indian society.

Tendulkar was in the city to launch 'Young and Fit India' — an initiative taken by the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU).

Speaking about the importance of introduction of sports at the school level, Tendulkar said, "Along with the country's history, the children should know about the sporting history of our country. The Hindi movies should not be the only medium to get information about our sports icons and therefore, sport should be introduced as a subject from the grassroots level. Introduction of sports as a subject will broaden the knowledge of our children."

"There are some people who focus on the problems but sports inculcates the habit of focussing on solutions to the problems," Tendulkar added.

Stressing the need of taking up a sport for physical fitness, Tendulkar said, "By 2020 we will be the youngest nation in the world but young does not necessary mean fit. We are already diabetic capital of the world. in terms of obesity figures, we rank number three. We need to bring that number down. Rather than spending money on hospitals, we should use that money for constructive things."

"If we want to be a healthy nation, everyone should take up at least one sports to become fit. You need not play a sport to become professional player but the sport will keep you fit," the legendary cricketer said.

Tendulkar also expressed his disappointment that there are not many grounds available to play. "There is a constraint of space. There are some grounds which are either not used or they are not allowed to use. I urge, that those schools have grounds should use for not only their own children but they should also allow children from other schools to use the facility," he said.

Tendulkar also urged the school and college administrators to take help of retired players from their locality in training children.
