The 13th edition of Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings 2016-17 have been released and it is not a good news for most Indian universities. Nine out of 10 Indian Universities which have been ranked have come down on the list as compared to last year's rankings. However, IIT Madras has made a debut in the global top 250 universities after rising by five places.

According to 'QS World University Rankings 2016' survey, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) hold on to the top spot, followed by two other American universities Stanford at second position and Harvard at third position.

The Indian Institute of Science Bangalore has slipped by 5 places -- from its 147th spot, it has slipped to the 152nd place. IIT Delhi has slipped from 179th position to the 185th position. IIT Kharagpur(313), Bombay(219), IIT Roorkee (399), IIT Kanpur (302) and University of Delhi (501-550) have met with the same fate too.

IISC Bangalore is world's 11th-best research institution according to QS's citations.

Ben Sowter, head of research at the QS Intelligence Unit attributes the relatively low numbers of PhD-qualified researchers.

The US dominate, with 48 institutions, ahead of the UK (30), Netherlands (12), Germany (11), Canada, Australia (9), Japan (8), China (7), France, Sweden and Hong Kong (5). The 'QS World University Rankings' are based on four categories: research, teaching, employability and internationalisation.

The methodology consists of six indicators: academic reputation (40 per cent), employer reputation (10 per cent), faculty student ratio (20 per cent), citations per faculty (20 per cent), international students (5 per cent), and international faculty (5 per cent).
