Mosquito menace: Vector-borne diseases rising in Rajasthan

This as the hospitals in the state continue to receive increasing number of patients suffering from these diseases.

Rajasthan, despite being a relatively dry and humid state, has become favourable for seasonal and vector-borne diseases including swine flu, dengue, chikungunya, malaria and Zika. This as the hospitals in the state continue to receive increasing number of patients suffering from these diseases.

In fact, the state's capital, Jaipur has recorded the country's biggest outbreak of Zika Virus Disease (ZVD). Till date around 10,000 patients of mosquito-borne diseases have been registered in the state while more than 2,000 patients of vector borne diseases have been found.

Zika Outbreak

Jaipur alone has registered 135 laboratory-confirmed positive cases of Zika virus in a span of one month from September 21 and positive cases are continue to come out. Though, according to sources, at SMS Medical College, the actual number of people infected with Zika is far over that of declared officially. However, government officials claimed that most patients found Zika positive have recovered.

Most cases of swine flu in India, the disease that claimed 279 deaths in 2017, also continue to present challenge to state health department this year as well. As per state health department's daily monitoring report of swine flu, during the period of January 1 to October 24 this year, total 201 people have been succumbed to swine flu in the state.

During the period total 1,998 people have been found positive for the virus H1N1. According to Integrated Diseases Surveillance Program (IDSP) of National Center for Disease Control (NCDC), in reported swine flue cases, Rajasthan with around 25 per cent of total swine flu cases in India, has surpassed Maharashtra where total 1,793 people have been tested positive for swine flu.

In the wake of latest Zika virus outbreak, mosquito containing activities are being conducted in Jaipur intensively for the last four weeks. But before that, in Jaipur alone, more than 2000 cases of dengue have been registered.

As per health department official data, total 4,773 dengue positive cases are registered till date this year and 5 patients are died due to the disease. Jaipur and Kota, both to be developed as smart city, together reported more than 2,500 dengue patients this year.

Till October 22 from January 1 this year, 238 cases of chikungunya have been registered at the hospitals across the state while 4,342 malaria patients have been found in the state
