After 133 Indian students were forced to abandon their MBBS course at Smolensk State Medical University (SSMU) in Russia, as the college began instructing them in Russian language in the second year, the university has now decided to increase the number of seats for Indian students in the English-medium course.
"The University is planning to increase the number of seats in the English medium course," MY Dyakov, Dean, faculty for foreign students, said through e-mail. "We intend to add 90 seats for Indian students and are planning for an extensive rise in foreign students that will be taught in English."
There are currently 180 seats for the MBBS course in English medium.
Meanwhile, the parents of students who returned to India have decided to take legal action against the Delhi-based educational consultancy firm Rus Education. The students claim the firm cheated them by claiming that they were enrolling for a six-year MBBS course in the English medium, while in reality, they were enrolled for a seveb-year MBBS course in Russian.
In its issue dated 11.10.17, DNA had reported how 133 Indian students – who travelled to Russia in 2016 to study MBBS at SSMU – were left in the lurch when the college switched to Russian as the language of instruction in the second year of the course.
These students were forced to terminate their studies at the university, and over 100 students left Russia on Monday and returned to India. The Indian Embassy in Moscow has taken up the matter with the university.
A parent of one such student from Kerala said, "We contacted another agency, which led us to Rus Education. We plan to file a police complaint."
Wasim Syed, director of Rus Education, said, "We will respond to the issue in the court of law. We are very much concerned about students who have taken admission into Smolensk University. We will make sure that they come out with bright colors and we will compensate the students."
