Prime minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday tweeted a video of his morning fitness regime in response to the challenge posed to him by Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli on the platform a few days ago. Kohli posed the challenge as part of the 'Fitness Challenge' trend that was started by union minister of youth affairs and I&B minister Rajyavardhan Rathore.

In his morning tweet, PM Modi can be seen exercising on his lawn. "Apart from yoga, I walk on a track inspired by the Panchtatvas or 5 elements of nature — Prithvi, Jal, Agni, Vayu, and Aakash. This is extremely refreshing and rejuvenating. I also practice breathing exercises #HumFitTohIndiaFit," he tweeted.

Interestingly, taking the challenge forward, Modi nominated Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy and tennis player Manika Batra to take it further. While Manika Batra's nomination comes as no surprise given that Modi heaped praises on the sports star recently, Kumaraswamy's nomination raised quite a few eyebrows. The Karnataka CM had recently foiled the BJP's attempts to form a government by forming an alliance with the Congress.

Therefore, it comes as no surprise that the CM came up with a tongue-in-cheek reply. "I am honoured & thankU very much for d concern about my health. I believe physical fitness is important for all & support d cause. Yoga-treadmill r part of my daily workout regime. Yet, I am more concerned about development fitness of my state & seek ur support for it (sic)," Kumaraswamy tweeted.

Batra, however, responded to the challenge by posting a video of her doing the Surya Namaskar and other yoga poses.

Sensing that this may rake up a controversy, Rathore told the media promptly that the PM's challenge video was positive and non-political in nature. "There are very few prime ministers who would share such videos. The simplicity of the videos being shared across the nation is creating awareness towards fitness in itself. The ripples can even be felt in the rural areas," he told reporters.

Modi's tweet amassed more than 20,000 retweets when most of his other tweets usually garner 2,000-3,000 retweets. The challenge requires people to upload a video of their fitness regime and then tag someone, so that "healthiness" and the Centre's 'Hum Fit Toh India Fit' initiative is promoted. Since Rathore's tweet, several film stars, sportsmen, and other prominent personalities from all walks of life have taken part in the challenge.
