More and more children children are confiding in their parents about being sexually abused because of good education about the basics of good and bad touch, say city experts.

More and more parents and schools, experts say, are teaching their children about sexual molestation and how to recognise it. The number of parents bringing instances of child molestation to experts is also on the rise, experts say.

Clinical psychologist Sohini Chatterjee said: "Since more and more parents are now educating their children about good and bad touch, body parts, through acting or videos, it has become easier for a child to confide to their parents whenever anything goes wrong with them. Parents are now being able to identify indicators of abuse like bed-wetting and avoidance of strangers. This in turns helps them knowing if something has gone wrong with a child."

Psychiatrist Harish Shetty said that in his opinion there was an increase in the number of molestation cases because paedophiles find anonymity in a globalised economy very conducive to express and carry out their urges. The second reason, according to him, was that children are also being sensitised and encouraged to express what happened to them. The third reason is that parents also do come forward to express their complaints, he said.

He had observed a greater number of people bringing instances of child abuse to experts, he said, as well as more people coming forward to report these cases to authorities.

Experts said the upper class is still afraid to report these cases for fear of public shame and ordeals in court. Experts add that not every child may be able to express her trauma; and that the child may continue to behave normally or act playfully despite having been targetted by a paedophile.
