The southwest monsoon made major advances in North India on Thursday as it finally arrived in the national capital Dehi, Haryana, Punjab and covered remaining parts of Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh. The Met department expects the monsoon to cover the rest of the country in 24 to 48 hours and predict heavy to very heavy rainfall in the hill states of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh.

"Based on the conditions seen on Thursday and over the past couple of days, we can say that the southwest monsoon has arrived in Delhi, Haryana and parts of Uttar Pradesh adjacent to Delhi," said BP Yadav, director, National Weather Forecasting Centre.

After a delayed onset, the monsoon has surged rapidly across the country and in the past two days, it was helped by a depression that had formed over the Arabian Sea and western disturbance. The depression battered Amreli district of Gujarat, killing more than 30 people and the state has recorded over 40 deaths due to heavy rains and gusty winds blowing at a speed of 80kms/hour. The western disturbance helped monsoon to push ahead across Punjab, parts of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Uttarakhand.

As of Thursday, rainfall was 28 per cent surplus across the country this month and none of 36 sub-divisions had recorded scanty or no rainfall. The Met department has also predicted that hill states of Uttarakhand, that witnessed a cloud burst floods in 2013, and Himachal Pradesh may receive very to very heavy rainfall at few places and extremely heavy rainfall at isolated locations. "As compared to the plains, heavy rainfall can have an adverse impact on hilly terrains. We are predicting rainfall in the range of 100-150mm in these states and it will be distributed evenly across districts," Yadav added.

The Met department has alerted the hill states about the chances of heavy rainfall as per standard procedures. The rainfall, after covering the country, is likely to weaken in the next week, Met experts have predicted.
