It's no exaggeration to say that perfumer and designer Monika Ghurde's murder case reads like a Bollywood script. A one-sided lover, a stalker sacked from his job who then goes on to settle scores by raping, murdering and robbing the woman, are all the elements that a scriptwriter would relish.
During interrogation, Ghurde's assailant and former security guard Rajkumar Singh, gave some spine-chilling details of the murder. Speaking to DNA, deputy inspector general of Goa police, VA Gupta said that Singh had helped Ghurde narrow down her hunt for a flat.
"A few months ago, when the victim was in search of a rental apartment, she came looking for a rental accommodation at Sapana Raj Valley society at Sangolda. There she met Singh for the first time and inquired if any flat in the society was available for rent. Singh then told her that there were many flats available here, after which the victim selected one."
Gupta said Singh very quickly became fascinated with his victim.
He added, "One day the victim had kept her umbrella in her car which Singh took away without her knowledge and when she complained, the umbrella was traced to the security guard's room."
Police said there were already a lot of complaints against Singh after which he was sacked from the job. Gupta said,
"Singh's two months salary of Rs 20,000 was due from his employers which they did not pay him. Having no money, he worked as labourer in Ponda and then came to Chennai, Pune and Mumbai in search of a security guard job. But since he could not get a job, he again came back to Goa on October 2."
The officer added that Singh also visited the colony where victim lived, twice, and met her. "Singh insisted the victim talk to his employer and ask him to give back his salary. He (Singh) said that he was removed from service because of the victim's complaint. However, Ghurde said that she had nothing to do with him being sacked from his job. But Singh did not believe her and looked for an opportunity to take revenge."
On October 3 he went straight up to the terrace of the building and hid there for two days looking for an ideal opportunity to seek his revenge. On October 5, around 1:30 pm, he came down from the terrace and found that the victim's car was not parked and waited for her to arrive. He again came down around 3:30 pm and saw the victim's car parked. He then waited till evening, said the police.
Singh then asked Ghurde her mobile phone's password. He then downloaded three pornographic clippings from the internet and showed it to the woman forcefully before sexually assaulting her. He then smothered her to death. The entire crime was pre-planned," Gupta said.
Police said they could crack the case only because they had done his verification when he was employed as a security guard. "We will add rape to the charges in this case. Singh was produced before a local court in Goa on Tuesday and he has been remanded to six days custody. We are yet to recover the knife that he had used in the crime," police officials said.
