Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Friday condemned the lynching of a top police office and warned violent mobs, saying police were exercising maximum restraint.

A deputy superintendent of police was stripped naked and stoned to death by an irate mob after he allegedly opened fire at a group of people, who caught him clicking pictures near a mosque in downtown area of Srinagar.

The police officer identified as Mohammed Ayub Pandith was on duty when the mob attacked him.

Speaking to media after his wreath laying ceremony, Mehbooba Mufti said, "Our police is one of the best police force in the country. They are courageous, but showing maximum restraint because they feel they are dealing with their own people."

Mufti also warned mobs that the day police lose their patience, it will become difficult. "The police officer had not gone for his work, he had gone to protect the lives of people," she said.

The Chief Minister also said that if they (security forces) are treated like this, the old days may return when people will have to run seeing security force vehicles.

Meanwhile, DGP SP Vaid termed the killing as sad and unfortunate.  He said that two people have been arrested and a third person has been identified. "They will have to face the law," he said.

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference (NC) leader Omar Abdullah also condemned the killing of the police officer, calling the manner of his death a travesty.

Pandit belonged to Khanyar area which is adjacent to Nowhatta where he was killed.

Muslims across Kashmir are observing Shab-e-Qadr (the night of power) with night-long prayers and supplications being made inside the mosques and shrines of the valley.

The authorities have already announced restrictions on movement of people in seven police station areas of the city as a precautionary measure.
