Eager to boost manufacturing in India and generate employment, prime minister Narendra Modi would be pitching Make in India in a big way in parleys with the US president Barack Obama. Beginning with four-hour bilateral talks at Hyderabad House on January 25, PM Modi is expected to take the Make in India forward in next two meetings with business leaders. Informed sources said India is looking for bilateral as an opportunity for big breakthrough and has made up its mind to bargain hard for Make in India for some key defence equipment and also for anti-cancer drugs and Ebola vaccine etc.
An important deal for Make in India could be for joint production of Hercules C-130 four-engine turboprop military transport aircraft. The counter Russian offer of IL-76 military transport aircraft for Make in India holds good bargaining chip for India and could help extract some good deal, said sources. India is also keen to strike a deal with the US for select defence equipment such as Gen 3 plus and Gen 4 night vision deices for the Army to equip it with better capabilities top guard the borders.
Indian officials are expecting some big ticket announcement by President Obama at the bilateral. "Among many things, we are expecting announcement for visa on arrival for select categories and some big initiatives in Counter Terrorism," said sources. There could also be agreement with the US for community colleges for higher skill development.
The same day evening PM Modi will accompany President Obama for a key meeting with CEOs Forum consisting of 16 odd CEOs (chief executive officers) of India Incorporate at ITC Maurya Sheraton. Informed sources said Modi wants to pitch for sector specific Make in India to President Obama at the powerful group of select CEOs Forum led by Tata's chairman Cyrus Mistry.
A blend of leaders in various sectors the CEOs forum is expected to be attended by India's top honchos Gautam Adani, Kumar Mangalam Birla, Azim Premji, Yogesh Chander Deveshwar, Anil Ambani, Pawan Munjal, managing director of ICICI Bank Chanda Kochchar, SBI managing director Arundhati Bhattacharya and BHEL Chairman B Prasada Rao among others. Next in line will be a meeting with the select delegates of CII and FICCI that is being organised by the department of industrial policy and promotion (DIPP). About 200 business delegates (100 each from CII and FICCI) are expected to come for the meeting that will also be attended by commerce minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
