evening.

Shah cited five central government schemes -- 'Ujjwala yojna', ending open defecation, Jan Dhan scheme, crop insurance and rural electrification -- as the key drivers of the BJP's spread among the poor.

The verdict was a popular endorsement of the government's policies, including demonetisation which, he noted, was raised by the opposition SP-Congres alliance and the BSP to flay it and also by Modi and him to seek people's support.

In his press conference, he largely refrained from attacking the opposition but made a jibe at outgoing Chief Minister and Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav, and Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi, Yadav's ally.

Asked about them, he said their fate was in people's hand not his. "If it is in my hand, then they will also do well," he said ligh-heartedly.

He said people are coming out of the grip of the politics of caste and religions and so should the media.

Shah recalled that his claim after the first two phases of UP polls that the BJP will win 90 out of 140 seats was rejected as a political statement by some but it has ended up winning 115 of them.

He also noted that his party has won six out of the 10 assembly seats in Amethi and Rae Bareli, the Lok Sabha constituencies of Rahul and Sonia Gandhi.

BJP's massive win is also being seen as a big boost to Shah with the UP verdict being projected by many party leaders as his most creditable performance since he took over its reins following the 2014 Lok Sabha results.

The party's old guard, including senior leaders L K Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi, had put him in the dock following its debacle in the Bihar Assembly polls in 2015 but its remarkable performance in the country's politically most crucial state is likely to silence his critics for a long time.
