On his annual evening out with the media for "Deepawali Milan", Prime Minister Narendra Modi suggested initiating a debate on simultaneous Lok Sabha and assembly elections in the country.

"If it is feasible, the idea should gain momentum and if not then it can be rejected... But, it should be debated," he said in his brief speech at the BJP headquarters on Thursday.

Modi, who had floated the idea at an all-party meeting ahead of the monsoon session of Parliament, said political parties favoured simultaneous polls but some were reluctant to say it.

"The Election Commission wants good senior officers as observers and they are roped into the electoral process involving other states. There is also the question of financial burden. This cannot be a government decision... In such a big country, it is necessary to debate it," he said.

He agreed that neither can it be imposed nor should it be imposed. "The discussion begins but comes to a standstill... If media plays a role, the discourse can be carried forward," he said.
Praising the media for its role in issues which involved public participation like Swachh Bharat, he pointed out that three states have been declared open defecation free. "Debate in social life has come to a halt. It would be good if media did something," he said.

Later, Modi walked down from the dais to walk through the hall to greet the media persons.
