Modi plans for national policy for mentally challenged

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is planning to introduce a national policy for empowerment and self-sustainability of mentally-challenged in the country, Union Fertiliser and Chemicals Minister H N Ananthkumar today said.

The policy will work towards creating necessary framework for mentally-challenged people's self-sustainability and empowerment.

"The policy will also evolve means to impart special skills and education for such people," he added.

Union Ministers including Social Welfare, Women and Child, Education and Health will coordinate to implement the policy, he told reporters after inaugurating a sales outlet of Yashasvini Swabimana Trust, an NGO working for mentally challenged.

He also urged NGOs to give their suggestions to draw a policy framework which will sensitise people's representatives and government officials.
