When you see him for the first time, standing all by himself at the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) office in Danapith, you wonder, why is chief minister Narendra Modi without his security guards?

But the moment you greet him, having mistaken him for Modi, Arvind Nayak hastens to break the illusion. “Deputy mayorben ni rah jou chu (I am waiting for Madam deputy mayor),” he says.

Nayak, who looks startlingly like Narendra Modi, is the official driver of deputy mayor Kalpana Bhatt. Apart from similar facial features and the same beard style, Nayak and Modi have another thing in common. Both are associated with the RSS.

“It was during my days in the RSS that some colleagues pointed out that I looked like the pracharak Narendra Modi,” said Nayak. “People used to ask me if Narendra Modi and I were brothers.” Nayak, 56, is a matriculate. He belongs to village Pansar near Patan and has been working for the AMC for a decade now. Earlier, he was a driver with the AMTS and then the official driver of chairmen of committees. He says he attracts a lot of attention because of his resemblance to the chief minister.

“Earlier, whenever I went with the deputy mayor on official tours, people used to gather around her car to see me. They probably mistook me for the CM and wanted to talk to me,” he said.

But Nayak has never taken advantage of the fact that he looks like the chief minister.  “Once I was sitting at a friend’s shop near the Income-Tax crossroads,” Nayak said.

“Some people who were passing by thought I was the CM and started to gather around the shop. My friend joked that I was Modi’s real brother and that I stayed in Maninagar.”

Nayak said that one of the people who had gathered there became convinced that he was Modi’s brother. “He insisted on dropping me home and even invited me and my family for lunch at his place,” Nayak said. “I allowed him to drop me home but, as I left his car, I again told him the truth and asked him to believe it.”
