Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday arrived the Chinese port city of Xiamen to attend the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) Summit. Nearly a week after resolution on the 73-day-long Doklam stand-off, Modi will hold bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Among other engagements, he is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin and other BRICS leaders. Besides BRICS nations, China has also invited Egypt, Kenya, Tajikistan, Mexico and Thailand, as guest countries for the summit.

Chinese President Xi stated that people want peace and cooperation, not conflict and confrontation. He also said the threat of terrorism has cast a 'dark shadow' on the world, but stressed that "resolving geopolitical hotspot issues was the need of the hour".

Soon after arriving in Xiamen, situated on China's southeast coast, Modi met the Indian diaspora there. In a Facebook post, the PM said, "India had the privilege of hosting the previous Summit in Goa in October last year. I look forward to building upon the results and outcomes of the Goa Summit. I also look forward to productive discussions and positive outcomes that will support the agenda of a stronger BRICS partnership under the chairmanship of China."

Modi was welcomed at the airport by Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Kong Xuanyou and Chinese envoy to India Luo Zhaohui. Ahead of PM's arrival, Luo, expressed his hope that China and India could open a new chapter in the development of bilateral relations, the State-run Xinhua news agency reported.

The end of Doklam stand-off ahead of BRICS Summit has been a source of relief for Beijing, which did not want to see the BRICS Summit to be overshadowed. Beijing had in the lead up to the summit toned down its sharp rhetoric.
