Aiming to repeat the performance of 1977, when a conglomeration of political parties unseated an "invincible" Indira Gandhi, the Janata Parivar merger seems well on the cards to challenge Narendra Modi this time.

This time their aim, to begin with, is to counter an upbeat BJP in Bihar first, where the BJP with Ram Vilas Paswan's LJP virtually annihilated other parties in 2014 Lok Sabha elections by winning 31 out of 40 seats.

A major constituent of the Parivar, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav declared in Patna on Sunday that the grand alliance will be led by Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and his party is ready for the merger.

Similar announcements are expected to be made by five other constituents of the alliance that include Janata Dal United (JDU), Samajwadi Party (SP), Janata Dal Secular (JDS) Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) and Samajwadi Janata Party (Chandrasekhar).

With both Mulayam Singh and Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar present in Delhi on Sunday, the buzz was that the merger would be announced on Sunday itself. But party sources said that all constituent political parties first require adopting a resolution to this effect (for merger) in their national council or national executive.

Javed Raza, a senior leader of JD (U) said the merger of all six parties is merely a formality now and its announcement will be made shortly.

"An official meeting of all six parties will take place before the commencement of the parliament session after recess on April 20. A formal announcement is expected to take place then," said Raza.

The new party's name could be - Samajwadi Janata Dal or Samajwadi Janata Party. According to party sources the symbol has also been decided but will be announced at the opportune time of the official merger. The announcement of the merger and name and symbol of the new party will be made Mulayam Singh in the presence of all top leaders of the conglomerate.
