In what can be termed a total collapse of law and order machinery in the state, local villagers torched a police station, pelted stones on the cops and went on a rampage for hours in Bihar's Bhojpur district on Sunday morning.

The mob was angered over the death of a mason, Chhenna Tatwa, who died in custody at Barhara police station in Bhojpur on Saturday. When Chhenna's body was brought to the station to be handed over to family members on Sunday morning, the villagers gathered in large numbers and turned violent.

Eyewitnesses said the mob first gheraoed the police station with Chhenna's body, but soon turned violent and went on a rampage. "They tore documents inside the station, broke the furniture and glasses and finally set the station ablaze. They also set afire some police vehicles that were parked on the premises," a cop said.

The unruly crowd also pelted stones on the cops, who finally resorted to lathicharge and fired in the air to disperse them. Two policemen sustained head injuries in the incident. Later, some agitators ransacked the Barhara block office and targeted senior officials who had gone there to take stock of the matter.

According to Bhojpur Superintendent of Police (SP) Kshatranil Singh, Shahabad range Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Mohammad Rahman has ordered an inquiry into the incident, and also placed under suspension Barhara police Station House Officer (SHO) Sudesh Kumar, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Arvind Kumar and a chowkidar.

Chhenna had been arrested in a drunken state on Saturday after his daughter complained that her father used filthy language and tried to outrage her modesty. "He jumped off the jeep and injured his head while being brought to the station. He later succumbed to it," SP Singh said.

Police have taken into custody 10 troublemakers and have tightened vigil in the area to avoid any further untoward incident.
