Violent mob allegedly attacked Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) MLA from Pulwama Mohammad Khalil Bandh injuring him seriously at Pricho village in the south Kashmir district of Pulwama.

The attack comes at a time when the mainstream parties leaders particularly from the ruling PDP MLAs are dragging their feet to visit their constituencies given the amount of anger against them across the valley.

Reports pouring in here said Khalil was on his way to Srinagar from Pulwama late Sunday night when a mob attacked his vehicle with stones. Such was the intensity of the stone pelting that his vehicle lost balance and skidded off the road before turning turtle.

MLA received serious wounds and was shifted to the army hospital for treatment. This is the first attack on the ruling party lawmaker since the unrest began on July 8 after the killing of Hizbul Mujahedeen commander Burhan Muzaffar Wani at Kokarnag in south Kashmir.

Pulwama has been seething with anger since the unrest with security forces opening fire at number of places leaving some protestors dead and scores others injured some of them blinded.

Superintendent of police, Pulwama, Rayees Mohommad Bhat however told dna that the vehicle of the MLA lost balance and suffered an accident. "He has been slightly injured. But there was no mob attack as such," he said.
Khalil's attack comes at a time when all ruling party MLAs have been asked to reach out to the people in their respective constituencies to cool the tempers in a bid to help in restoring peace and calm in the valley.

However, the MLAs are unable to go to the constituencies given the anger against the mainstream parties across the Valley. Even some ministers visited district hospitals to meet the injured. But they were escorted by hundreds of security men who ensured their safety.

Ministers later got their photos released to press to show that they are trying to reach out to people, but the fact remains that they are unable to go to the public places. Even residence of one of the MLAs was set ablaze by mob in Kokarnag some days ago.

"It is a tough call," said a ruling party leader about meeting people in his constituency.

Feeling the heat and disconnect, the chief minister Mehbooba Mufti has convened an All Party Meeting on July 21 to discuss the prevailing law and order situation and the measures to be taken to restore peace and normalcy in the Valley

Curfew remained imposed in all the 10 districts of the valley to prevent any escalation in the protests and street violence for the 10th day in a row. Around 2115 persons injured during the prevailing law and order situation, 1924 have been discharged from the hospitals while 191 are still undergoing treatment including 70 persons with eye injuries

Police said the overall situation throughout Kashmir valley remained under control and there was no report of any untoward incident from any part of the valley.

"However, stray incidents of stone pelting were received. A few persons and police/CRPF men were injured in these incidents. A base camp store of potato seed belonging to Agriculture Department was set on fire in Wouhlutra, Rafiabad by miscreants," said a police spokesman.

Mehbooba also broke her silence and said the government is taking various measures to restore calm and it needs support of every section of the society to normalise the situation to end the miseries of the people. "It is the responsibility of the every section of the society including the political leaders, media, the religious heads, the business community, the prominent citizens and especially the emancipated youth to rise to the occasion and help the government in restoring peace and normalcy in the Kashmir", she said.

Principal Secretary Home RK Goyal briefed the meeting about the overall law and order situation and the steps being taken to restore normalcy in the Valley. "Situation has stabilized in most of the districts and except for some sporadic incidents of protests and stone-pelting the overall law and order scenario has improved substantially", he said
