Mizo National Front (MNF) chief Zoramthanga on Saturday took oath as Chief Minister of Mizoram, four days after his party stormed to power by defeating the Congress.

Zoramthanga was administered the oath of office and secrecy by Governor Kummanam Rajasekharan at the Raj Bhavan in Aizwal at 12 noon on Saturday. The MNF president took the oath in Mizo language.

Election to 40-member Mizoram Assembly was held on November 28 and counting of votes took place on December 11. The MNF won 26 seats in the 40-member Assembly, followed by the Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) at eight and the Congress at five.

The Governor formally invited the MNF chief on Wednesday to form the next government after receiving the signed notification of the Assembly poll result from Election Commission officials.

The Governor on Thursday summoned the first session of the Assembly from next Tuesday, sources in the assembly secretariat said. The session might continue for three or more days when swearing-in of 39 new MLAs of the 40-member state legislature would be conducted.

MNF MLA Lalrinawma was appointed as the Pro-tem Speaker for the first session of the eighth state legislative Assembly.

Lalrinawma was elected from Tuikum seat in central Mizoram's Serchhip district. The two-time legislator would be sworn-in at the Durbar Hall of Raj Bhavan on Saturday at 2.30 pm.

He would exercise the powers of the Speaker during the session until Assembly speaker is elected, a notification on Friday said.
