Gujarat MLAs exchanged slaps, kicks and abusive words, with one of them even hurling a mike stand at his opponents, prompting the Speaker to adjourn the House on Wednesday.

When the house met again after about two and a half hours, the Speaker suspended two Congress MLAs, Pratap Dudhat and Amrish Der, for three years from all House proceedings; Congress member Baldevji Thakor was suspended for a year. The motion of suspension brought by the ruling BJP was passed with majority votes.

The ruckus was sparked by a debate on a point of order raised by Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel during question hour. Patel criticised the opposition members for delaying the procedure on a question.

Congress MLA from Jam Khambhaliya, who insisted on raising the query, was not allowed to do so by the Speaker and another opposition member, Amrish Der from Rajula, came to his defence and shouted at the Speaker.

BJP members rose from their seats and started hooting at Congress members. Some BJP members purportedly hurled abusive words, which provoked Congress MLA from Savar Kundla Pratap Dudhat to rush at BJP's Jagdish Panchal with a broken mike-stand. The members clashed in the lobby outside the House too.

When proceedings resumed, Patel brought the motion to suspend Dudhat and Der for three years. Patel said that Thakor beat Panchal and one more BJP member, Harsh Sanghvi, in the lobby and threatened him. The motion to suspend Thakor too was brought in the house.

Leader of Opposition Paresh Dhanani, deputy leader Shailesh Parmar and others said Panchal and Sanghvi should be punished equally as they provoked Congress members. But this was not allowed by the Speaker, who put the motion to vote. The motion to suspend Dudhat, Der and Thakor was passed with majority. The opposition staged a walk-out, saying the Speaker was biased.
