DMK working president MK Stalin on Tuesday slammed vice-president M Venkaiah Naidu for advising the ruling AIADMK in Tamil Nadu to fulfil its electoral promises of late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa at a public function held in Raj Bhavan.

"Naidu can give advice in private but not during a public function since he is the Vice-President," Stalin said in a statement.

Naidu's advice to the state government came during the release of the book "Those Eventful Days" highlighting the contribution of former Tamil Nadu Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao on Monday. "Once a government is formed and it proved its majority in the Assembly, then it should go to the people only after five years. We cannot expect the governor to act beyond Constitution," Mr Naidu said trying to justify the actions of the then Governor Mr Rao who was at the helm of affairs during the crucial periods of Jayalalithaa's demise and rebellion in the ruling AIADMK.

Pointing out to the case pending the Madras High Court seeking a direction to Governor to order a floor test to the Edappadi K Palanisami government that had lost the majority, he said that Mr Naidu's statement has shocked not only him but everybody who respected the constitution.

Expressing his displeasure over Mr Naidu's remarks, he said he would not ask Mr Naidu whether it was appropriate for him to speak politics at Raj Bhave while holding a constitutional post as it would amount to showing disrespect to the post. "However, I hope the Vice President himself will do a self-assessment," he said, recalling the Naidu's statement that he would not speak about politics or any party soon after he was named as the VP candidate.

"It may be his personal wish to see that the promises made by Amma (Jayalalithaa) were fulfilled. But a person holding a post of VP making such a statement is not at all acceptable," he said, adding that he hope that the VP executes his responsibility fully and would avoid using the Raj Bhavan for political propaganda in future.
