MK Stalin offers to quit as his supporters want him to replace M Karunanidhi as party chief

MK. Stalin, the DMK treasurer and son of party president M. Karunanidhi, has offered to give up his post as his supporters want him to replace the former as the party president.

According to reports, the decision comes in the backdrop of demands by his supporters for larger role for Stalin. Stalin, who is currently the treasurer, wanted the post of the DMK General Secretary, which is held by K Anbazhagan, but he was asked to continue as the treasurer.

The filing of nominations for the post of DMK's president, general secretary, treasurer and four audit committee members will take place on January 7. 

Earlier, in May 2014 Stalin had offered to give up his party post following the party's rout in the Lok Sabha polls.

The run-up to the Lok Sabha election saw a bitter fight in the party's first family, leading to the dismissal of Stalin's elder brother MK. Alagiri, the DMK south zone organising secretary.

Founded in 1949, the DMK is one of India's oldest parties.
