Mizoram government to ban sale of firecrackers during Christmas

Mizoram government would ban import, sale and use of firecrackers during Christmas and New Year celebrations, state Home minister R Lalzirliana said in Aizawl on Friday.

Lalzirliana told media persons that the state government had successfully banned firecrackers during festive season for five years resulting in prevention of wastage of huge amount of money, controlling pollution and creating serene atmosphere for the sick and elderly people during the festivities.

He hailed the role of the law enforcement agencies, some government departments, NGOs and the media for cooperating with the government on the issue.

He said that entertainment programmes would be organised in every locality in Aizawl on New Year's eve and prizes would be given to the best organised programmes.

The minister said that the Deputy Commissioner of Aizawl district would send a displeasure note to the Assam Rifles authorities in Aizawl for reported extensive use of firecrackers during the last Diwali despite appeal from the local authorities.
