'Mission Electrification': Indian Railways aims to achieve 100% electrification of railway network by 2022

Indian Railways has said that it aims to achieve 100% electrification of its railway network by 2022 through its 'Mission Electrification' plan.

The plan was introduced by the Indian Railways to curb pollution by shutting down diesel engines and to increase the average speed of the trains.

Sources close to Indian Railways said that the efficiency of diesel engines is significantly less and the operating cost of diesel engines is very expensive.

Indian Railways also claims that 'Misson Electrification' will bring down the operating costs to a large extent.

Also, the Railway Board has directed all the Railway Zones to stop the use of 31-year-old diesel engines.

Railways plans to execute its 'Mission Electrification' plan beginning with the Northern Railways.

Indian Railways had launched Mission Electrification on November 3, 2016, under the guidance of Minister of Railways Shri Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu.
