Jawan Kailas Gedam, who was deployed with the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and had gone missing from Assam on April 13, 2017, surfaced in Mumbai on Sunday.

Local MP Ramdas Tadas identified Gedam. The jawan, who does not recollect the episode, was sent back to his native place in Devli village in Wardha district.

Kailas, who was employed by the BRO after his brother died in service 15 years ago, was expected to reach his native place on April 16 or April 17, after he was granted leave on April 13.

According to Tadas, Gedam’s family called up his unit in Assam to inquire about his whereabouts when he did not reach home. The family was told that he was on leave. Gedam’s wife then contacted Tadas, who hails from the same village, for help. Tadas tried to contact the defence ministry and the Prime Minister’s Office for assistance to trace the missing jawan.

In a turn of events, Gedam placed a call to his wife 15 days ago from West Bengal, telling her he had no recollection of the entire episode. His wife even travelled to West Bengal and Delhi to trace her husband, but her efforts went in vain. Gedam’s wife also tried contacting him on his phone for a month, but could not get through.

A little less than a month after he went missing, Tadas said Gedam was found begging for food at a shop in Fort on Sunday. Gedam showed his identity card to the shop owner telling him he is a jawan. The owner gave him food and let him charge his mobile. As soon as his phone was on, a call from Gedam’s wife came through.

The shop owner informed the jawan’s wife about his whereabouts. Gedam’s wife told the shop owner to ensure Kailas remains there. The wife immediately contacted Tadas, who incidentally was in Mumbai on official work. Gedam’s wife informed the minister about the development, with the latter making his way to Fort to identify Gedam.

Tadas took Kailas to a local police station, and after due procedure, he has sent back Kailas to his native place.
