A day after a major fire broke out in a military canteen at Gunpowder Road on the Dockyard Road, fire officials and the police estimated that goods worth Rs70 lakh could have been destroyed in the inferno that engulfed two godowns of the canteen. The grade 2 fire broke out around 10.15pm on Saturday in the ground-plus-one structure. Four fire engines were rushed to the spot immediately and the firefighting operation went on to be one of the longest among the last few fire incidents, with the entire process being completed by 3am the following day. However, there were no casualties or injuries reported.

According to the Byculla police, there are five godowns in the military stores canteen. The fire had occurred in godown number three and five.

"The godowns in which fire had occurred contained expensive VIP bags, buckets and innerwear. Supply of goods is made from this canteen to other military canteens in the city. It is assumed that property worth Rs70 lakh has been lost in the fire. This is a British-era godown," said senior police inspector Suresh Magdum of Byculla police station.
A senior fire department official said they were yet to ascertain the cause of the fire. "Bottles of alcohol were stored in one part of the godown. We had to take them out immediately so that the fire did not spread further. The godowns were covered with cement sheet roof," the official said.

Magdum said, "We have initiated an inquiry into the matter. The fire department will submit a final report."
