Even as tense stand-off continues in Keran, the Pakistan army tried to open another front by pushing in more militants from Fateh Gali, 25 km west of the battle zone of Shala Bhat, in the same sector of Line of Control (LoC). Four infiltrators were killed and a huge cache of arms and ammunition were recovered from them.

The encounter started around 9.15 pm on Friday when troops deployed in the general area of Fateh Gali detected movement of some terrorists about 50 metres from the Indian post along the LoC.

“On being challenged, the terrorists opened heavy volume of fire on own troops who retaliated immediately.  In the ensuring gun fight, four terrorists were killed,” a defence spokesman  said.

During the initial search, a large quantity of war like stores, including six AK-47 riffles, 10 pistols, four UBGL, four Disposable Rocket Launchers and six small rucksacks have was recovered.

This was the second infiltration bid in the last 24 hours in the general area of Keran where the army is fighting heavily-armed militants and special troops backed by Pakistani Border Action Teams in the Shala Bhata village on the LoC.

“Due to the recent surge in attempts of infiltration in the same sector, the troops were in a state of high alert. The existing strong anti-infiltration grid has resulted in elimination of seven terrorists in last 24 hours,” he said.

Against the backdrop of increased infiltration attempts by militants, Northern Army Commander Lt Gen Sanjiv Chachra arrived in the Valley to take stock of the security situation. “He also carried out an aerial recce (reconnaissance) of  forward posts. In the next two days, the army commander is scheduled to visit the forward formations and units,” a defence spokesman said.
