Militants kill cop in cold blood; Government foils march to army corps headquarters

A policeman, who stepped out to fetch milk for his family, was shot dead by the militants outside his residence at Quil village of south Kashmir's Pulwama district even as the authorities foiled the separatists' march to army's 15 corps headquarters by detaining Hurriyat hawk Syed Ali Shah Geelani on Saturday.

Selection grade constable Khurshid Ahmad Ganie had gone home on Friday evening after duties. On Saturday morning, when he left house to fetch milk, militants hiding near his residence fired indiscriminately killing him on the spot.

"He had gone out to fetch milk at 6am. He was shot dead outside his residencem" Rayees Mohommad Bhat, superintendent of police, Pulwama, told dna.

Posted in the district police lines Pulwama, Ganai is survived by his father, wife and a 14-year-old son.

Tearful farewell was paid to Ganai at District Police Lines Pulwama. SP Pulwama Rayees Mohammad Bhat led the officers and jawans in paying tributes to the martyr.

The killing of Ganai reflects the dark underbelly of Kashmir's unrest. In the current situation, the policemen are caught between a rock and a hard place in the Valley. An SPO of Sopore recently announced to quit his job at a public rally after protesters made attempts to attack his house on two occasions.

Cops nowadays are often seen avoiding moving in the day and prefer travel during the night that too in civvies to avoid being targeted. They even conceal their identity cards because at some places protesters check people's IDs.

Strict curfew was imposed in Srinagar to foil the separatists' march to army's 15 corps headquarters. All roads leading to Badami Bagh cantonment were sealed by razor wire and security forces were deployed in large numbers to prevent people from marching to the cantonment.

Hurriyat hawk Syed Ali Shah Geelani was detained when he tried to defy the house detention to lead the march at Hyderpora. Moderate Hurriyat leader Muirwaiz Umar Farooq was arrested on Friday night and shifted to sub jail Chashma Shahi.

Police said barring five incidents of stone-pelting in Anantnag, Shopian and Bandipora, overall situation remained peaceful and under control across Kashmir Valley.

"The stone-pelting incidents were reported from Barbugh, Hillow, Kadgam in Shopian, Sangam in Anantnag and Watpora, Potshah in Bandipora. Ssome miscreants in order to disturb the situation assembled on roads and pelted stones on police and security force deployments," a police spokesman said.

Police said restrictions under Section 144 Cr PC remained in force in the Valley. "However, curfew was imposed in Srinagar city, Anantnag, Pulwama and Pampore towns," he said.
