Militants assault cops, decamp with weapons

The incident has come 24 hours after J&K constable Tariq Ahmad deserted his post at Pakherpora police post and fled with his AK 47 riffle and 30 rounds on Tuesday night.

A group of armed militants stormed a fortified police post and disarmed the on-duty cops before decamping with four assault rifles in the outskirts of Srinagar on Wednesday night. The police has launched a massive operation to track down the militants and recover the looted weapons.

The incident occurred on Wednesday when a group of around seven militants attacked the police post of 13th battalion of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) Armed Police near a temple at Goripora-Rawalpora.

"The militants attacked an armed guard of the JKAP 13 battalion and decamped with four service rifles of the policemen at Goripora. The area has been cordoned," said a police spokesman. The looted weapons including one INSAS riffle, one carbine, and two self-loading riffles.

Deputy Inspector General of Police, Central Kashmir Range, Vidhi Kumar Birdi said it is a 25-year-old guard-post at Goripora. "We are trying to identify the militants responsible for the incident," he said.
