Militant threat forces 10 SPOs to resign in south Kashmir

Militants have unleashed a fresh wave of terror, forcing around 10 Special Police Officers (SPOs) to announce their resignations through Imams of the local mosques in the troubled south Kashmir region.

Militants have unleashed a fresh wave of terror, forcing around 10 Special Police Officers (SPOs) to announce their resignations through Imams of the local mosques in the troubled south Kashmir region.

Local imams of Luraw-Jagir and Pastoona Sayedabad villages in the Burhan Wani’s hometown of Tral announced the names of seven local SPOs who have resigned from the police department, on Friday. Earlier three SPOs have announced their resignation through mosques in the area.

Sources said fresh resignations were announced by the Imams during the Friday congregation in Tral area. The Imams named each of the SPOs who have quit their jobs apparently to escape the wrath of the militants.

Director General of Police, Jammu and Kashmir Dr Shesh Paul Vaid told DNA that they are verifying the details. “There have been some announcements in mosques, but we are verifying it. We have not received anything formally”, he said.

The resignations come at a time when police have started crowd funding to rehabilitate 499 SPOs who lost their lives in the war on terror. Special Police Officers are the casual employees of the Police department who work on monthly consolidated salary of Rs 5000 to Rs 6000

The resignation also comes against the backdrop of attacks, abductions, and killings of local policemen and security force officials in south Kashmir. Latest being the attack on two SPOs in Tral on August 6 and August 7 injuring one of them

On July 28 an SPO Mudasir Ahmad Lone was released a day after they abducted him from his home at Chankatar village in Tral.  Lone is the fourth security force man to have been abducted in the last two months and second in the last one week.

On July 20, police constable-on-leave Mohommad Saleem Shah was abducted from his home at Mutalhama village of south Kashmir's Kulgam district. His body was recovered from neighboring Odipora Qaimoh village on July 21. On July 5, terrorists abducted a 25-year-old policeman near his home in the Shopian district before killing him in the neighbouring Kulgam district of south Kashmir.

On June 14, terrorists abducted and killed 24-year-old rifleman Aurangzeb of 44 Rashtriya Riffles in Pulwama district. Rifleman Aurangzeb was en route home in Poonch to celebrate Eid with his family when he was abducted by terrorists from Kalampora before being shot dead.
