Milad-Un-Nabi or Eid-e-Milad is an extremely important day for Muslims across the globe. Today marks the birth anniversary of Prophet Mohammed. Hence this day is particularly dedicated to remembering the teachings of the Prophet. In India, Milad-Un-Nabi is celebrated from 20th November evening to 21st November this year. 

Prophet Mohammed was born in 570 CE on the twelfth day of RabI-ul-Awwal in Mecca. It is the third month of Islamic calendar.  Throughout the entire month, Prophet's birth anniversary is celebrated. 

The Shias also believe that in this holy day, Prophet Mohammed had chosen Hazrat Ali as his successor. For Sunnis, this day is primarily about praying to the Prophet. Normally, on this day, Muslim families gather and remember the important teachings of the Prophet. This is a day to also show kindness to the less fortunate. Hence many people share and donate food and other things with the needy. 

The day is marked with much enthusiasm in India and many countries across the globe. Most significant is in Jammu and Kashmir, where faithful get a chance to see relics of Prophet Mohammed kept in the holy Hazratbal shrine.In different countries, there are different gestures people do to celebrate this day. In Morocco, the king gives pardon to many prisoners on this day. 

PM Modi, President Kovind among others have greeted the devotees on the occasion of Milad-Un-Nabi. Banks are closed in some of the major cities of India.
