The Unaided Schools Forum (USF), which represents private unaided schools and minority institutions, has decided to approach the high court if the education department does not stop sending show cause notices to schools for refusing admission under Right to Education (RTE) quota of unaided schools.

As per the RTE Act, schools should provide admission to students from economically weaker sections (EWS) at entry level. The entry level could be either nursery, kindergarten, or even standard I.

Till last year, unaided schools have been adhering to the law, but this year, the education department is allotting students for admissions in unaided schools, for both, pre-primary and standard I.
This move has created an uproar amongst schools which have been receiving show cause notices from the education department.

To this, the USF on April 10 sent letters to all unaided schools asking them to not give admission to students under RTE quota, in both pre-primary as well as standard I.

The forum has also asked schools to give admission in whichever is their respective entry level – which be either nursery, kindergarten or standard I.

A principal of a Navi Mumbai based school said: "I have 60 seats to be filled under the RTE quota, and our entry level for admission is nursery. The education department is forcing me to have 20 admissions in nursery and the rest in standard I, which is against the rule."

SC Kedia, secretary of USF informed dna that the forum is upset over the education department's diktat to unaided schools, saying: "As per the RTE rule, admission should be given at entry level, which could be nursery, kindergarten or standard I. But they cannot force schools to take in bother pre-primary or standard I admissions. Tomorrow, they will send admission for standard II or III also."

Kedia also said that the forum will meet the principal secretary regarding the issue. "If he will not help, we will approach the high court," he said.
