With 720 ceasefire violations by Pakistan this year, the skirmishes between the forces of the Indian and Pakistani troops have been the highest in the last seven years. This is a big jump compared to last year's violations; there were 449 ceasefire violations along the Line of Control (LoC) and International Border in 2015.

In 2015, the number of ceasefire violations was 405,and 347 in 2013, 114 in 2012, 62 in 2011, and 70 in 2010. The analysis on the escalation of violence between India and Pakistan is part of a review done by the Ministry of Home Affairs. Till October this year, 12 civilians and 17 security personnel were killed in cross-border firing, while another 79 civilians and 67 troops were wounded in firing and shelling.

The increase in ceasefire violations comes following the surgical strikes carried out by the Indian Army in Pakistan occupied Kashmir, targeting terror camps, after crossing the LoC in October 2016.

After a brief lull of three days, Pakistani troops violated the ceasefire with India along the Line of Control (LoC) again in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir and shelled the forward areas on Sunday, a police officer said. The shelling from across the border began in Khari Karmara area at 10.55 am and continued for about an hour. No casualty was reported.

India shares a 3,323-km-long border with Pakistan, of which 221 km of the International Border and 740 km of the LoC falls in Jammu and Kashmir.

In 2016, there were 449 incidents of ceasefire violations, in which 13 civilians and 13 security personnel were killed and 83 civilians and 99 security personnel were injured.

The Indian forces have also been successful in going past last year's tally of terror kills this year. Over 200 terrorists have been killed in Kashmir in 2017, against 150 in 2016.
