Met Dept predicts heavy rain in Raj for next 48 hours

10 dead so far in Rajasthan floods, 500 people rescued and 15,000 stranded; Examination of ITI in Barmer, Pali, Jalore and Sirohi cancelled

Flood waters fill city streets in Sirohi in Rajasthan

After affecting normal life in as many as 11 districts in the state, the south west monsoon has become mild, though four districts in the state are still under the influence of flood-like conditions. Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rains in several parts of the state in the next 48 hours. In view of the flood situation, the examination of ITI in Barmer, Pali, Jalore, Sirohi has been cancelled.

Despite the rains receding in Jalore, the flood situation has remained in seven subdivision areas of the district. Ten deaths have occurred in the district so far and more than five hundred people rescued. Due to excessive flow of water, the main canal of Narmada broke at more than two dozen places. Five dams in the district have overflown. Around 80 per cent of the crop is estimated to be damaged in the district due to fields being inundated.

In the Barmer district, the monsoon took a break after a 24-hour long fierce spell of rain, but with the opening of the gate of the Jawai dam and the flow of river Luni, more than thirty villages of Balotra, Sindhari, Guadamalani and Dhorimana area are left isolated leaving nearly 15,000 people stranded. On the other hand, due to decrease in rains in the Kavas, the crisis has been put off for the moment, but the villagers are being evacuated from there.

In Pali district, rains running for more than a week stopped on Sunday, but waterlogging continues to be a problem as over 10 colonies of Pali city were flooded due to overflow of Lakhotia pond and Lorradian dam. Water was being released from three gates of Jawai dam in Sumerpur on Monday also.

With the continuous rain for the past nine days, normal life has been disturbed in Sirohi district headquarters. The houses have collapsed and water is still filled in many colonies. Since the wall of overflow Angaur dam was damaged and the pipeline was swept away, drinking water is not available in many areas of the city since last week, causing problems.

HEALTH DEPARTMENT CALL

State health department also taken a call on flood like situation in parts of the state. In order to ensure the proper arrangement of treatment for the prevention of seasonal diseases, state medical and health minister, Kalicharan Saraf gave direction to send 20 dedicated teams of doctors and nursing staff to Jalore and 5 teams to Sirohi district. Considering the emergency situation ordered to cancel the leaves of all government doctors and para-medical staff has been issued. The Principal Secretary, health gave instructions to make adequate quantity of chlorine tablets to maintain the purity of drinking water in the over affected areas. Medical Institutions across the state have also been instructed to ensure adequate supply of medicines related to seasonal diseases.

POLITICS OF FLOOD

Flood situation in the state has given leaders a platform for politics as well. On Monday state congress president Sachin Pilot and LoP in state assembly Rameshwar Dudi started their two-day visit of flood affected Jodhpur division including Barmer, Jalore and Sirohi. Congress leaders said that the measures taken by the government to provide relief in flood affected areas are not enough. Health minister Kalicharan Saraf, on the other hand, not only quashed the opposition charges but also called the visit of both leaders as a show off only. He said that at the time when Gujarat is facing severe condition than Rajasthan, congress MLAs of Gujarat are enjoying in Karnataka.

ROADS

Flood situation in districts of the state has effected connectivity badly as roads have been completely washed away by heavy water flow at many places. State government has sought help from NHAI to restore the road connectivity. In Barmer, Sanchor-Gujarat, Sindhari-Jalore, Samadri-Jodhpur routes are closed. Apart from this, the Barmer-Jodhpur road route is also closed. In Sirohi Delhi-Kandla National Highway and Sirohi-Jalore State Highway are closed. State government is also preparing to send the proposal for the repair of damaged bridges, power systems and dams from the center as in Jalore 21 power sub stations in Jalore are still unable to supply.
