The Delhi Police on Friday chargesheeted the father and mother of a juvenile accused of mowing down a 32-year-old man with a Mercedes in north Delhi’s Civil lines area in April last year.

The court will take cognisance of the charge sheet filed on Saturday by the District Investigative Unit (DIU) of Delhi Police. Apart from the father, an old Delhi-based businessman, and mother, the charge sheet also mentioned a driver who had made contradictory statements in the court.

The parents of the accused were booked for giving the keys to their son despite knowing that he was not an adult.  According to the police, the accused had been a regular offender of the traffic rules and regulations and the parents overlooked that by handing him the keys.

The driver was also chargesheeted for making contradictory statements. Initially he had stated that he was on the wheels of the car, but was later petrified by the wide media coverage and death of the victim. He, thereby, admitted in the court that he was not driving the vehicle.

The incident took place last year in April when Siddharth Sharma, was knocked down by the juvenile while he was trying to cross a road near Ludlow Castle School in Civil Lines.

The victim was thrown several feet into the air as a result of the crash thus landing 15 metres away from the place he was standing. A group of youth stepped out of the car following the incident and fled the spot leaving the car behind.

The charge sheet was filed under sections 304 (punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 201 (causing disappearance of evidence), 203 (giving false information) and 109 (Punishment of abetment if the act abetted is committed in consequence) of the Indian Penal Code.

Considering the seriousness of the crime, the Juvenile Justice Board decided to try the juvenile as an adult.
