AIADMK Rajya Sabha MP S Muthukaruppan on Monday reiterated his decision to resign his MP post in protest against the centre’s refusal to form the Cauvery Management Board and the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee within six weeks deadline set by the Supreme Court order on February 16.

However, his resignation letter, a copy of which was circulated to journalists, was found to be not in the appropriate format and hence most likely may be rejected, the New Indian Express reported.

"The general format for the resignation is that it must be a one-line statement making clear the member's intention to resign from the house. The resignation letter must not elaborate on the reasons for the member's decision to quit," the report added.

Reading out his resignation letter addressed to Rajya Sabha chairperson and Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu to media in New Delhi, Muthukaruppan said he was mentally distressed with the non implementation of the Apex court verdict by Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Central government.

Muthukaruppan announcement to resign his MP post comes amid the opposition parties, particularly DMK, demand for the resignation of all the MPs from Tamil Nadu as a mark of protest against the centre for not implementing the Apex court verdict.

Despite the pressure given by Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswamy and deputy CM O Panneerselvam to the centre several times and the continuous protests by the AIADMK MPs in the Parliament, the centre continued to delay the formation of the CMB and the CWRC and it is causing severe mental agony to him, he wrote in his resignation letter to be submitted to Venkataiah Naidu. He said that he is resigning his MP post even though his term ends in 2020.

Muthukaruppan on Saturday said that Amma (late chief minister J Jayalalithaa) had fought for the sake of delta farmers and it was "she who gave me this position. I am happy to resign from the position on the Cauvery issue."

"As an MP, I did whatever could be done for the sake of Tamil Nadu. When people are not able to get water, there is no use in holding the MP post," he had said.
