A mentally-challenged minor girl from Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh was allegedly raped by her coach during a sporting event in Australia, police said today.

Accused Narendra Luther, working as a coach in the private institution for mentally challenged children, allegedly sexually assaulted the girl during the first week of December when the Asia-Pacific Regional Games-2013 were held in Newcastle in Australia, they said, based on a complaint lodged by the victim's mother.

"The victim along with others (mentally challenged children of the private institute) participated in the sporting event in Australia, where Luther allegedly sexually assaulted her," a police officer attached to Dharmavaram sub-division told PTI over phone.

Following the complaint, Bathalapalli police registered a case against the coach under relevant sections of IPC and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and he has been arrested, the police officer added.

Special Olympic Games for sports person with intellectual disabilities was held at Newcastle in December 2013.
