Following allegations against Arunabh Kumar, here is a list of other powerful men who were accused of sexual harassment by female colleagues

Social media is outraged at The Viral Fever founder Arunabh Kumar’s alleged sexual harassment of women colleagues. But the recent past is peppered with instances of men in positions of power making unwelcome advances at females, and often junior colleagues. Here’s a roll call of the big cases and what happened to the accused in each of them.

2002: Phaneesh Murthy

Former Infosys director Phaneesh Murthy was accused of sexual harassment by his secretary Reka Maximovitch. In 2013, Araceli Roiz, investor relations head of iGate, where Murthy was CEO, alleged she was pregnant with Murthy’s child and accused him of forcing an abortion. 

Status: In 2002, Infosys made an out-of-court settlement with Maximovitch and sacked Murthy. iGate sacked Murthy when the 2013 incident came to light.

2010: David Davidar

David Davidar, then CEO of Penguin Canada, was accused by former colleague Lisa Rundle of sexual harassment. Davidar allegedly harassed her for three years and assaulted her in 2009. He was sacked the same year.

Status: He dismissed the allegations and later both parties reached an out-of-court settlement.

2013: Tarun Tejpal

Then Editor-in-Chief of Tehelka magazine, Tarun Tejpal was accused of sexual assault and rape by a female colleague during an event in Goa in February 2013. In November, an FIR was registered against him and he was arrested by Goa police. In July 2014, he was granted bail.

Status: Tejpal is currently out on bail. The next hearing will commence later this month before the additional district sessions court in Goa.

2015: RK Pachauri

Climate scientist and former TERI chief RK Pachauri was accused of sexually harassing a female colleague in February 2015. The woman researcher quit her job, following the alleged harassment.

Status: Following criticism, he was removed as Director-General of TERI in 2016. The case is being heard in court.

2017: V Shanmuganathan


Eighty employees of Shillong Raj Bhavan sent a letter to the President and Prime Minister accusing Meghalaya Governor V Shanmuganathan of sexual harassment and seeking his removal.

Status: Shanmuganathan resigned in January this year
