Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on Thursday unanimously adopted a resolution urging the Centre to withdraw its nod given to Karnataka government to prepare a detailed project report for constructing a balancing reservoir across Cauvery river at Mekedatu.

Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami moved the resolution, which was adopted after a brief discussion, in the specially convened Assembly session on Thursday evening. The proposed Mekedatu project would have a storage capacity of 67 thousand million cubic feet, but Tamil Nadu farmers and political parties are afraid that the state would not receive its share of water if the reservoir is built.

The resolution urged the union ministry of water resources to immediately order the Central Water Commission to withdraw the permission given to Karnataka for preparing the detailed project report. "This August House requests the Government of India to direct the Government of Karnataka not to take up any construction works by it or through its agencies at Makedatu or at any other place in the Cauvery basin of Karnataka State, without the consent of the State of Tamil Nadu, and in violation of the Final Order of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal and the judgment of the Supreme Court," it said.

After the Assembly was adjourned sine die following the adoption of the resolution, the Chief Minister wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging him to direct the union water resources ministry to withdraw the permission given by CWC to Karnataka on Mekedatu project. "The action of Karnataka in proposing a reservoir and that of Central Water Commission in giving permission for preparation of a Detailed Project Report have caused deep anguish and apprehension in Tamil Nadu.

"Tamil Nadu will be denied its due share of water, which has been given to us by the Supreme Court after a protracted legal battle," he wrote in the letter.

Leader of the Opposition and DMK president MK Stalin said that his party extended support to the resolution even though the state government refused his suggestion of condemning the Centre for permitting the Karnataka rather than requesting it withdraw the nod.

The session was convened following demands by the Opposition parties led by the DMK, which had organised a protest over the issue on Tuesday in Tiruchirappalli.

Meanwhile, Karnataka Water Resources Minister DK Shivakumar has written to Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami seeking an appointment to discuss the proposed Mekedatu project and reach an amicable solution.
