Bengaluru executive Mehdi Masroor Biswas confesses to operating Twitter handle supporting Islamic State

The Bengaluru police has said that a city executive Mehdi Masroor Biswas has confessed to operating the Twitter account supporting Islamic State (IS). Mehdi was detained on Saturday after report by UK's Channel 4 came to light about his involvement in operating the Twitter handle @ShamiWitness.

After speaking at length about his social media affiliation for the terrorist group, Mehdi later denied reports claiming him to be the man behind the Twitter handle (read more). 

According to media reports, Mehdi was employed with Kolkata-based ITC Ltd, which is said to be fully cooperating with the police in the investigation. 

An FIR has been filed against Mehdi and he has been booked under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

The police has said that Mehdi had been helping the IS and his social media feeds were 'a source of incitement and information for new recruits' in the terrorist organisation. They also added that he was close to IS terrorists. The police added that Mahdi does not have a criminal past.

Biswas, who hails from West Bengal is an engineer by qualification and has been working for an MNC in Bengaluru since 2012.
