On the day Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti stressed the need for creating a conducive atmosphere for reviving the dialogue and resolution process, separatists hardened their stand asking New Delhi to first recognize Kashmir as a dispute before any engagement.

“Violence has changed nothing on political spectrum of Jammu and Kashmir, but brought mayhem, miseries, economic disaster, academic breakdown and social disorder to the State. Unfortunately, the some sections of the youth who resort to violence are impeding the resolution process instead of facilitating it,” said Mehbooba.

Chief Minister noted that majority of stakeholders in Jammu and Kashmir want resolution of the issues through peaceful political means and stressed the need for creating conducive atmosphere for reviving the dialogue and resolution process.

“We have witnessed a gory era of death and destruction for the past 26 years. Has it changed anything on ground except inflicting deep and pestering wounds on Kashmiris?  instead of facilitating resolution of the issues. Violence only left behind a trail of tragedies and pain in almost every household in Kashmir. It converted our play-fields into graveyards and once happily living families into traumatized souls,” she said

Mehbooba wondered that if resolution of political issues through dialogue is not the way out, then what is the way out of the present imbroglio?  “Tell me what is the solution other than sitting across the table and talking in a peaceful and amicable atmosphere. People should give peace a chance so that the reconciliation and resolution process can be revived through dialogue and discussion”, she said.

Chief Minister said her government strongly believes that nothing is valid and should be happening for Jammu and Kashmir except with the active involvement of its people.

“However, the people from all shades of the political opinion shall have to evolve a consensus on a pragmatic and workable solution of the problems confronting the State in the interest of peace and stability. Time has come to strike a new benchmark in light of the global and regional realities for the resolution of the State’s problems,” she said

Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL), a conglomerate of Hurriyat hawk Syed Ali Shah Geelani, moderate leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and JKLF leader Yasin Malik who are supervising the agitation, were quick to retort that any solution under the ambit of Indian constitution is unacceptable.

“Kashmiris will not accept any solution under the ambit of Indian Constitution. United Nations Security Council resolutions should be implemented if India sincerely wants a permanent solution to Kashmir dispute”, said Geelani.

Mirwaiz on the other hand batted for tripartite talks and sought referendum to solve the Kashmir imbroglio.

“The most democratic way forward is to hold a referendum on both sides of the ceasefire line. Let the people decide or a meaningful engagement among the three parties to the dispute-- India Pakistan and most importantly the people of entire J&K --keeping in view their wishes and aspirations”, he said
