Breaking her silence over the rape and murder of eight-year-old tribal girl in Hiranagar Kathua, Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti on Sunday said some people are trying to communalise the issue and vitiate the peaceful atmosphere.

"Some people are trying to communalise the Kathua incident and vitiate the peaceful atmosphere. But I have full faith that the people of Jammu will not allow them to succeed. Justice will prevail," Mehbooba said, while addressing the convention of youth wing of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Mehbooba's statement comes a day after standoff between the coalition partners deepened after two senior PDP ministers warned against 'competitive communal politics' being played over the rape and murder of the eight-year-old girl in January.

This follows the participation of two senior BJP leaders, including Forest Minister Lal Singh and Industries Minister Chander Prakash Ganga, in the rally of Hindu Ekta Manch (HEM) to support the demand for a CBI probe into the incident.

Mehbooba said her late father Mufti Mohammad Sayeed had joined hands with BJP because people of Jammu had given them the mandate. "Mufti sahab said the people of Jammu had voted for BJP and how could they be kept away from the government. If people of Jammu are not made a partner in the government, then what sort of a government will it be? Plus Mufti sahab had thought joining hands with Modi ji, who had got a big mandate, will help to take the state out of the current morass. That was the reason we joined hands with the BJP," she said.

The chief minister noted that conspiracies are being hatched to create a communal flare up in Jammu. "Attack in Sunjuwan was also aimed at harming the brotherhood in Jammu. Gandhi ji had said that he had seen a ray of light in Kashmir. I am saying I have seen that ray in Jammu. Jammu has been the abode of peace and it has always welcomed people of all faiths," she said
