National People's Party (NPP) president Conrad K Sangma on Monday said that he has been invited by the Governor to form the government in Meghalaya.

The NPP leader said that the swearing-in ceremony will take place on Tuesday.

On Sunday, Sangma met the Governor Ganga Prasad and staked the claim to form a coalition government in Meghalaya.

The coalition -- Regional Democratic Alliance (RDA) --comprises the NPP, the United Democratic Party (UDP), Hill State People's Democratic Party (HSPDP) and the BJP.

Meghalaya threw up a fractured mandate with the ruling Congress emerging as the largest party, marginally ahead of its rival, the NPP, an ally of the BJP at the Centre and in Manipur.

The Congress bagged 21 seats in the 60-member Assembly, eight less than the last elections.

The BJP, which drew a blank in the last elections, got two seats. The UDP won six seats while its alliance partner the HSPDP won two seats.

The People's Democratic Front (PDF) bagged four seats, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) and three Independents got one seat each.

Polling for the 59 seats of the 60-member Assembly in Meghalaya was held on February 27. A Nationalist Congress Party candidate was killed in an IED blast, which resulted in countermanding of polls in one seat.

Outgoing Chief Minister Mukul Sangma had contested and won the elections from two seats.

On Sunday, leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge lashed out at the BJP-led NDA. He said that the opportunity must be given to the single largest party. Kharge said that if the party cannot prove a majority, then the party in second position needs to be invited.

"The BJP doesn't want a democracy and wants to create an environment of fear. It won't go on for long, people will understand this gradually," he said.

However, North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) Convener Himanta Biswa Sarma claimed that the Congress Party's decision to send its top leadership to Meghalaya lacked calculation and showed the immaturity of the party president Rahul Gandhi.

"I think top Congress leaders were sent to Meghalaya as they were told that they are the single largest party. However, they have no support from regional parties, as the latter is supporting the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). I feel that Rahul Gandhi sent four senior leaders of the party to Shillong without any calculations. It shows his lack of maturity," Sarma told ANI.

Meanwhile, BJP leader Subramanian Swamy claimed that as in the case of Meghalaya, the Congress will have to concede defeat in Karnataka as well.
