The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress on Tuesday emerged as winners in the two municipal corporation seats of Maujpaur and Sarai Pipal Thala, respectively, where bypolls were held earlier this month.

Reshma of the AAP won from east Delhi’s Maujpur seat (ward no. 40 E) with 9374 votes while Congress leader and former Leader of Opposition (LOP) in North Corporation bagged the Sarai Pipal Thala ward with 10,946 votes, in the bypoll results declared by the State Election Commission (SEC) this morning.

While Reshma defeated Congress candidate Rekha Sharma by a small margin of 699 votes, Mukesh Goel won the seat by defeating BJP candidate Mangat Ram Sharma, who got 8203 votes.

“The area has a major problems with heaps of garbage, overflowing sewers and poor infrastructure in MCD schools, which will be my priority. We will work in cooperation with the ruling party,” said Reshma, 32, a former teacher.

Goel has been two-time councillor from Dhirpur ward, which after the recent delimitation was declared a women’s seat. Sarai Pipal Thala was carved out as a ward during this delimitation exercise from where Goel was given the ticket this time.

There are a total of 272 wards across the three municipal corporations in the city --- North, South and East.

Bypolls were held for two seats after two SP candidates had died before the elections held on April 23.

Days after the BJP swept clean the municipal corporation polls in 181 of the 270 wards, the AAP and Congress tally have increased by one seat each now having 48 and 31 seats, receptively.

Bypolls to the Maujpur and Sarai Pipal Thala wards were held on May 16 and May 21, respectively. While Maujpur had recorded 58% voting, the voter turnout in the latter was 46.3%.
