A first year MBBS student was found hanging in her room in the girls hostel in AIIMS campus in New Delhi on Monday morning, police said. The deceased woman, identified as Khushboo Chaudhary, was a native of Bikaner in Rajasthan and had joined the institute as a first year MBBS student on July 10.

Though the AIIMS authorities have ruled out any possibility of ragging as a cause behind her extreme step and also claimed to have initiated an inquiry into it, the police are yet to arrive at any conclusion regarding the same, said a senior police officer. No apparent sign, suggesting any form of physical conflict, was visible on the deceased woman's body. However, other students in the campus and Khushboo's parents, who arrived in Delhi in the afternoon, are being questioned to find out if she was subjected to any form of mental harassment, the officer said.

The mobile phone of the student has also been taken for analysis of call data and other records. "No case has been registered so far. The police have taken up the investigation under relevant sections of CrPC," DCP (South) Prem Nath said.

According to police, the incident was reported around 2.50 am today. No suicide note was found in the hostel room.

"AIIMS security, hostel staff and hostel superintendents immediately rushed to the incident site and also informed the Delhi Police authorities. Thereafter, the police arrived at the hostel and took the charge of the body which was then taken to AIIMS emergency," AIIMS spokesperson Amit Gupta said.

"According to her friends, she was a cheerful girl and had spent the last evening with most of her friends shopping and going out. According to one of her friends, she had been normally interacting with her friends till a few minutes before this incident was reported," Gupta said.

The preliminary enquiry by AIIMS has ruled out ragging or any adjustment difficulties (she had been a student at the AIIMS for six weeks only) as the possible cause of alleged suicide, he said. Gupta added that AIIMS authorities have also ordered an internal inquiry into the incident and will be interacting with the police in order to find out the cause of this unfortunate incident.

At night, she was chatting in the hostel room with her friends after which she politely asked them to leave her alone when she received the phone call, an official privy to the investigation said. On Sunday, Chaudhary was found hanging at her hostel room in the AIIMS campus. She had joined the institute on July 10 after securing the 24th Rank (3rd rank in the reserved category) in the entrance exam.

The mobile phone of the student has been taken by police for analysis of call data and other records. "No case has been registered so far. The police have taken up the investigation under relevant sections of CrPC," a senior official.

According to police, the incident was reported around 2.50 AM and no suicide note was found in the hostel room. AIIMS security, hostel staff and hostel superintendents immediately rushed to the incident site and also informed the Delhi Police authorities.

Thereafter, the police arrived at the hostel and took the charge of the body which was then taken to AIIMS emergency, where Chaudhary was declared brought dead, the official added. The AIIMS authorities have claimed that they have also initiated an inquiry into the incident.
